Are you planting starts, or seeds? I would have started seeds indoors about 6 or 8 weeks ago.

I set my starts out about 2 weeks after our average last frost date ... depending on the weather, of course. In my area that will be sometime during the first 2 weeks of May.

I actually intended to plant my containers this weekend, but the weather report predicted a cold front. It looks like it's going to be cold and windy for most of the week. Hopefully, I'll be able to plant this coming weekend. :)

basil is good in containers.

If started indoors it can go outside as soon as all danger of frost is past.

Porch is usually shady, may not be enough sun for basil, which is a full sun plant.

All gardening is local. SP8 is in Australia, probably has sunnier summers than you do. What works for him, may not work for you.

Oregano, thyme, mint, parsley should work there.

My basil does OK with only about 5-6 hours worth of sun!

But yeah maybe I have sunnier summers

so growing mint in containers is good so it doesn't spread?

Most of the herbs that have square looking stems tend to be difficult to contain. That would include any of the mints, bee balm, and similar plants. So yes, it is good to grow them in containers, or to have a restraining border around the planting.
