Indoor herbs

What have some of you done well with window-sill pots, natural light? I ask as apartment dwelling son wants a couple of herb pots, and he admittedly kills plants. He would probably over water the dry feet ones. Situation is 5th floor, west face window, so gets full blast of sun.
He does cook, and will use fresh herbs.

I am looking to pot up a couple of basil. Parsley perhaps?

Hi Susan!
Great that your son cooks for himself and evan more so that he adds his own fresh herbs! Mediterranean herbs such as lavender and oregano, thrive in full sun, slightly lean soil and very warm temperatures. Anual herbs like basil, chervil, coriander and dill, also prefer full sunshine. If they don't receive a bit more water they will simply bolt to seed. With the exception of a handful of shade loving herbs, they all share 3 growing conditions:
1.Lots of sunshine: the combination of sun and slightly lean soil, seems to cause the oils and flavour of the herbs to intensify
2.Regular water with good drainage: roots in continually damp soil may eventually rot.
3.Periodic trimming and harvesting to keep them full: if you don't trim and use your herbs, the plants will grow tall and lanky and annual herbs will go into seed quickly. Prune woody perennials like rosemary, lavender and sage at least once a year.
Good luck and enjoy!!javascript:emoticon('')[/u]
