Perilla aka shiso

Anyone else grow this annual?

We use the japanese green perilla (shiso) for sushi, crispy miso pork rolls, and sauces (including pasta sauce).

The korean stuff I grew but I'm not sure what to use it for, other than pasta sauce and using it to pick up bits of meat and roll them up and eat them.

Don't have time for a long post. I grow the Red Shiso:

My parents grow the green stuff. I'm getting some seeds this year to start my own patch.

I did not get it to seed. It flowered, but no seeds. It is a weed I guess. Those seeds will come up 3 years later sometimes.

The Korean one is very different. Quite minty.

My problem with growing the stuff is keeping the wife away from the things in order for them to get established……..

She starts frothing at the mouth and climbing up the walls when the first true leaves come out.

Apparently in Chinese medicine it is used for severe stomach/intestinal distress. Chinese doctor friend said to make a tea if something isn't sitting well (like me).

Well for anyone who doesn't grow it:

needs light and warmth to germinate
makes a bush
fast growing
aggressive roots - claims its space
does ok with partial shade
