The above list needs lots of work.

Will be repeatedly editing to add native plant nurseries as well as to remove them if they begin selling non-native wildflowers that are invasive.

If you have suggestions of nurseries to add, please post in this thread-

Yes, this is a difficult list to create. So many nurseries out there are trying to jump on the native plant and organic gardening wave and when you take a close look at their plant lists, they're offering a disproportionate number of plants that not only aren't native to the state where they are selling their plants but they aren't even native to the continent of North America. Some of their advertising stunts to appear "green" and to appear as if their plants are "environmentally responsible choices" are almost laughable... were it not for the fact that I don't think I've met one person who hasn't fallen for the, "I thought it was a native" or "I had no idea I could even buy an invasive species". The big issue is that most of these nurseries don't indicate the native range of a plant and they certainly aren't indicating that plants are formally identified as noxious weeds or invasive species and I'm sure that's intentional to boost sales. I can't believe how many nurseries I see out there that are trying to bill themselves out as native plant nurseries that have disproportionately low numbers of actual native plants being listed for sale. I'm still flabbergasted at the number of wildflower nurseries popping up advertising they're got natives that definitely are capitalizing on people not having a good working knowledge of the definition of native plant. That online nursery American Meadows is a poster child for invasive species and noxious weeds. They're enticing us by advertising we can create meadows using their wildflower mixes of Baby's Breath, Forget Me Nots, Ox Eye Daisies, Morning Glory, Chicory, Bachelor's Buttons, Siberian Wallflowers, Dame's Rocket, Shasta Daisies, and Queen Anne's Lace??? Some of those are illegal to sell in my state but these companies must be flying in under the radars selling them in wildflower mixes. Forest Farm is right in there with companies like American Meadows with all the garbage plants they offer. Shame we don't have laws on the books forcing nurseries to part with enough information for gardeners who prefer native plants to be able to shop with confidence knowing that a plant they are buying from a nursery is at least native to this continent or not.

If a nursery has a website, I look for other known invasive species such as the Butterfly Bush, English Ivy, Purple Loosestrife, Water Hyacinth, Norway Maple, etc. If I see any of those, chances are pretty good that particular nursery is totally in it for the money. Then I take a look at their lists of plants and make a quick determination if they're 90% native or not. Then I take a quick look at what other plants they are listing for sale and if they take the time to indicate whether a plant is native or not if they are offering it for sale. Most of the nurseries listed above in the first post are solid bets. That doesn't mean I might not have missed an inappropriate species being offered for sale or that they might not change over the years to come but with the healthy rise in concern for the environment and a heightened public awareness of invasives, I suspect we'll be seeing more and more actual native plant nurseries surviving past the 5-year mark. The nurseries that don't have websites are a little trickier. Some of them have online html or excel lists and some you have to call to be forwarded a snail mail list but most can e-mail a list. Same deal with them once I can see their plant lists.

So, I plug along adding to the list mostly as a place to be able to send personal friends who ask where can they go to get "real" native plants but more so because I've been duped myself many a time. Money is far too hard to come by to be lured into buying plants that make lots-o money for the nursery selling them but end up being costly mistakes once they're in the ground on the my end.

And, I added a few more nurseries for Florida last night too!

Lorax, you're amazing! Wow, this must have taken you hours to compile. Thanks a million!

It's funny as I went to this forum, I was thinking that "this is Lorax's Forum" at least, it was your idea to have to forum I think.

I'm glad you found us.

Yes, it does take hours because some nurseries are sneaky and one really has to poke around in their lists of plants being offered for sale to "weed" out the native plant nursery impostors. Many charlatans selling plants these days. The nurseries marketing to butterfly and hummingbird gardeners seem to be the worst offenders. I cringe when I read some of their plant descriptions combined with their anecdotal comments. The other deal is there are a lot of ma and pa nurseries out there that don't have computers. Takes them a little bit of time to respond with lists. I've found some really great ma and pa nurseries. Didya see what I added for Canada a few weeks ago!

It's been a while. I can't recall if it was my idea or not. Might have been NEWisc's idea. Very happy it's here in the line up though.

Added a nursery for Maine and a few for Kansas.

Oddly enough while trying to research native plant nurseries to add, this exact thread keeps coming up in google and IE. Pretty wild.

TheLorax - This has turned into a superb list of native plant nurseries. Thank you for all the effort, and the thorough scrutiny of the entries!

It's time this thread was made a "Sticky".

There a little herb farm near here that sells some native plants. When I mentioned my interest in them, she gave me lists that she and her friend compiled of native plants specific to the part of southern NJ that we live in, saying that many lists for South Jersey are biased toward Pine Barrens habitat. Her farm doesn't meet your criteria, Lorax -- she had butterfly bush, and other "popular" items, but she did have a good number of natives identified and labeled.

I got an amsonia blue star, Asclepias tuberosa, and monarda (labeled old fashioned bee balm).

Also, in your list for NJ, Wildbird Oasis has been sold and the new owner is not handling native plants. He gave me the name/address of someone who is ... oh what did he say ... "filling the vacuum" ... I think ... but I have to look for it.

I recently bought a few plants (some Zizias "Heartleaf Alexander" and Turks Cap Lilies) from Toadshade Nursery and found them to be helpful and responsive via email.

Please put suggestions for nurseries in this thread-

Your right! I checked out the plant lists for your friend's nursery. Butterfly Bush isn't the only invasive species they're selling. I stopped counting the invasives they were advertising after 10 and I couldn't help but notice they weren't indicating any of those species as even being potentially invasive. That's definitely not a native plant nursery. Good catch.

I'll remove Wildbird Oasis, thanks for mentioning that.

Just removed a nursery from Wisconsin for selling wildlfowers that were from other parts of the world. I spotted quite a few on a new list they added to their website that included species that were noxious weeds and invasive species.

Removed a Florida nursery for slipping Quercus angustifolia (Sawtooth Oak) into one of their "wildlife" 5 packs. Sawtooth Oak is highly invasive.

Also removing Texas Native Bulbs. They're not having page load problems as originally believed. The site doesn't exist any longer.

Did not have a chance to update any of the Canadian Native Plant nurseries.

editing to add- finished updating Canadian native plant nurseries.
