propagating by runners

I have some raspberries that I would like to have more of. I have heard of propagating by runners. Could I take a long stem of my raspberry plant, still attached to the root, bend it a little in the middle, and push the bent portion into the ground, stake it down , and water it? Would it start to grow roots on the part in the ground? How about if I used rooting hormone on the part that was stuck into the ground?

Look around your existing plants and you will most likely see runners starting on their own. If not, your method will work. Most of the time no rooting hormone will be necessary. My blackberries and raspberries provide plenty of new plants...I even dig them up and move the rooted runners to new places. Hard to kill the runners.
