Many houseplants must be grown indoors because they do not do well outdoors in a given climate zone.
Thus, tropical and subtropical plants are grown indoors in temperate and even subarctic climate zones.
OTOH, some kitchen herbs can be grown indoors, but I've never thought of those as "houseplants," like (e.g.) dracaena, pothos, monstera, etc.
