Phak tob java is the Thai name of the aquatic plant that originated in the Amazon River Basin in South America. It was introduced to other parts of the world as an ornamental plant, and over a century the water weed -- known as one of the fastest growing plants the world ever knew -- has choked rivers and lakes in many countries, such as the Tonle Sap in Cambodia or Lake Victoria in Congo, as well as rivers in Australia, waterways in Louisiana and of course canals and rivers in Thailand.
