I got antsy to do something today so I stole (well she let me) one of my moms English Boxwoods from her window box. I pulled it out of the box along with half the soil seen in the pic with the pot I had hoped to fit it in.

I spent the next hour and a half pruning the branches to thin out the crown, I really had to dig through it all, and pruning the mass of roots. I was disappointed when I realized it wouldn't fit in the pot I picked out so I got a new one. The roots were just too thick. I worked it hard cutting pie shaped pieces out to try and loosen it but it would only get so small and I didn't want to kill it by taking too much off. It worked out well anyway.

After the tree buds out and grows a bit, I will cut back the longer branches to the new buds. I was affraid to leave any branch without leaves so I left them a little long. I'm pretty happy with this and am excited to see it grow.

Thanks alisios. After looking at the picture, I decided to pull down the right branch using a guy wire. I also cleaned up the cuts with my new knob cutters.

Thanks gnome. I knew it would turn out from the beginning I was very excited with it from the start. I'm very happy with it so far and it will only get better. Just goes to show how people can have different visions for things, granted a photo isn't the best way to judge a tree.
I have a shallow, green, round pot that I think I may try out next year. If I don't like that, I will have one custom made for it through Tom at www.shadysidebonsai.com If you haven't checked out his site you should.

constantstaticx3,
Do you do virtuals? If not I would be happy to try out the new pot for you. I would need a couple of pictures taken from eye level perspective and against a neutral background, a good one each of the tree and the pot. Take them from approx the same distance so I won't have to guess about the scale.

No I don't do virtuals and I will gladly take you up on that offer. I'll get some pics tomorrow.

Tom,
Here you go, it did not turn out too bad. For future reference a background without detail is easier and one shot each of the pot and the tree head on is preferable. As it is there is a slight left/right stereoscopic effect going on because both items were extracted from the same photo.

Thank you very much that looks great. I now understand what you mean with the photo's. I didn't before because I've never done anything like this before. I think I'll invest in some sort of photo editing program because I'm starting to get into photography now. At least with my trees. I like to get the lighting just right so I move it all around my deck to find the right spot. I try to take most of my pics at dusk because of the great lighting.
Thanks again for the virt I will definitely be putting it in that pot next year as a start and then I may have a drum pot made for me somewhere down the road.
