Dwarf Variagated Ficus

So I went to the garden center today and had to take a look at their bonsai section. They normally don't have anything worth buying but I look anyway. I came across this tiny ficus that had great shape to it, I couldn't pass it up.

Heres a couple picks. I used a quarter for scale.

Heres one of the base, which I thought was pretty thick for its size.

I think it has a good shape already and doesn't need too much work, I'm happy with its size but I will probably cut back the top. Now I need a tiny pot for the future . I'm going to wait until it recovers from the potting before I prune anything. It reminded me of ynot's little ficus.

BTW, I like the new spell check, good idea :D

Nice! Looking foward to seeing what you do with it. The good thing about Ficus' is that you have something to keep you busy in the winter. :D

Tom,

I'm sure I'm showing my ignorance but I was not aware that there were variegated Ficus. I used to keep a variegated Portulacaria and it was a very slow grower. In fact when I finally got some straight green ones I was surprised at their vigor compared to the variegated form. Not sure if this applies to Ficus, just something to file away.

Yes, I see variegated forms all the time. They are sold as house plants in those big clumps around here. They had them at the same garden center, I may have to get one and try fusing them or something.

Sorry to say this tree was short lived. It was potted about two weeks before I went away on vacation and my cousin, who was supposed to water our plants, did not do a good job and it dried up and died. It was very rainy that week too but in its small pot it still needed supplemental watering.

Well next time I'm going to put my small trees in a tray of sand to try and keep the moisture in.

Another lesson learned.

Tom
