Spring 2005 planted this seedling in my yard. Summer 2005 it was viciously abused by a self propelled mower to the point I didn't feel comfortable leaving as a landscape plant.

Spring 2006 I dug it up, trunk chopped about 7 1/2 inches above the soil line and put it in a 3 gallon rootmaker pot. Here it is today.

Buds are starting to swell, so it's repot time. Will keep in the greenhouse to protect against freezes.

The damage done by the mower might get carved out and brought up around the left side of the plant towards the top near the chop to simulate a lightening strike later on.

I have some trident whips in the ground and I can't wait to play with them...About two or three more years though.

Sometimes, The 'Toro pruning' can work in your favor eh..

Thanks! I'm just starting to get into tridents. Bought a bunch of them last spring. I've been told our climate is perfect to field grow them. Our constant wind helps create those nice buttress roots very quickly and they seem to grow like weeds here.

Yeh, that mower did a number on it. Weed eater is just as bad.

I agree with ynot your root system are amazing. I hope mine get that way after I repot this year into better soil.

I might also suggest maybe to carve out the wound near the base and hollow it out a bit. It will give your tree a great elusion of age.

He said near the top...o yes I'm sorry I was thinking he was just going to make this at the top, I didn't read it correctly. I'm not doing so good at posting today.
