I bought this tree to enter into the Bonsai Chat styling contest. After I styled it I realized it really wasn't what I wanted so I reconsidered. Here is the sequence of its styling for this year. Its been through a lot and will now rest for a year or two.

I made another visit to Tom Brown's at shady side bonsai. He taught me the techniques of carving and I went at it on this tree. I first carved it with hand tools, then touched up with a power too, finally I burnt it with a torch and applied lime sulfur after. I'm using this tree as a tool to learn but still trying to make something of it.

Norm,
This species can take a beating. I did do a number on it but Tom Brown is confident that I left enough of a vein that it should make it. Yews backbud vigorously and it already has some buds in place. It is now being kept in the shade to recover. I highly recommend this species to anyone and honestly I would say it is by far the best beginner tree that I can think of (yes better than a juniper). I will look for a good example of how spectacular these trees can be. https://www.shadysidebonsai.com/id98.html
I also have another one that I bought from Tom. I'm in the process of carving it and I will post it when I'm done.
