cabbage in a pot

I have a single cabbage plant in a pot. It is about a foot tall and looks very healthy. There are tons of leaves. I'm concerned about how it makes the head. Do I have to put a rubber band around it or will it come naturally?
Oh, by the way, his name is Charlie Cabbage

IF it makes it will come naturally.
Tying leaves around a (center) head is called blanching. Blanching is commonly done for cauliflower but not cabbage.

IF it makes a head please post the picture before you harvest it.
I would be pleasantly surprised if it makes in a pot, especially one that is smaller than the plant. If like other Brassica it has a pretty healthy taproot which would be difficult to have|grow except in a very large|deep pot.

[ For reference ]
I dug & pulled (organic) collard plants this year after they had gone to seed. Most of the quite large(2"+ diameter), tapering roots were well over a foot long ...

Have Fun!

fhj52,
Thanks for the reply. Since it is in an 8 inch dia. pot, I think we can get away with repotting. We'll give it a good home and see what happens.

First of all, are you sure that is a cabbage, it looks so very much like a butterleaf lettuce of some variety?

Also just as a personal preference. I never let my cabbage head as have a preference of green leaves. So a cabbage can be harvested just like collards or leaf lettuce. Pluck those lower leaves as they mature and just keep plucking further and further up the stem as more leaves gets size. If you want the cabbage to head, do nothing, and it will head up all by itself as the outer leaves curl around the inner leaves.

...
Funny. That's what I thought but the owner should know, right?
