Growing vegetables out of soil made of newspaper.

I've read somewhere that tomatoes are not that fussy about their soil. Some people even suggested to mix newspapers, soil and egg shells.

I was wondering, first, how true that is, and second, if it would work for other vegetables, like cucumbers.
