What plant is this?

Does anyone know what kind of plant is this?

I have seen that plant before, but the orchid looks like a goner. It is in too large a pot. It looks like it is in dirt and it is subterranean. Most likely the roots are dead. Orchids are air plants, they normally cling to the bark of a tree or sometimes rocks with their roots exposed. They do take a long time to die. The canes die slowly even after the roots are gone.
