Early Season Clematis showing no growth

I have a Montana Broughton Star planted in an old milk churn which is approx 3 feet tall and 1 foot wide. I planted it last spring against a pergola, it flowered and put on a lot growth right up until late September.
There is currently no sign of any new growth and it looks just like a mass of bare twigs.
Is it possible that being in a metal churn, it has become frost damaged?
Should I be more patient in view of the constant temperature variations, I live in the north of England?
Any thoughts and advice would be welcombed, thanks in advance.

It may have been damaged by frost however, it is early in the season so, I'd wait for a bit. Though, you should see some buds by now.

Bamford UK?
It should be showing signs of life by now but our weather has been pretty wierd this year. Choose one branch and cut through to see if it is green inside. It is possible you could have lost it as they are not as hardy when young.

I gave your advice a try Jess, and am sorry to say that there is no sign of green and the stems are very brittle.
Oh well! off to the Garden Center.
