Transplanting wooded ferns into pots

Hi

I have a bunch of beautiful common wooded ferns I want to salvage for my garden for next spring. These ferns are currently in the ground in a part sun part shade area near my garage. The garage is being demolished and a new structure is being put up and I really do not want to lose these gorgeous plants. I was hoping I can transplant them into the pots and once the garage is completed (late fall) transplant them back into the same spot.

1) How should I go about transplanting them into the pot? Should I keep them outdoors in pots or indoors? How long should I wait to transplant them back into the ground? (the garage should be finished mid to late fall) ? Should I keep them in pots outdoors until spring time?

Most of the leaves have now turned brown. When I transplant them should I cut the brown leaves off or just transplant the whole thing? Also what type of soil should I use and type of pot.

I do not have a green thumb and I really don't want to lose these ferns!

Thanks everyone! :)
