HELP - I have VERY Strange Mushrooms In Potting Soil

Greetings all!!

I'm new to this network. I found this community in my attempt to research exactly what kind of mushrooms I have growing (and have since removed) in my potting soil.

I have an indoor palm and have ALWAYS had problems having the florish when I lived in Washington State. Since moving to California, I decided to give it another try and seem to be doing much better with the help of abundant light.

:?: I have the UGLIEST mushrooms springing up in troops in my soil. They don't seem to be the common mushrooms found in potting soil. The tips are caramel in color. It looks like it could be hard, but my guess is they arent. The stems are long.. and the caps are stringy.

I LITERALLY WANTED TO THROW UP. :(

I don't know why but just the clusters... the mass.. and the oddity of these types. I had mushrooms before but never like these!!

 Does anyone know WHAT these are?? And are they going to be harmful for my now vibrant indoor palm??

Thanks so much!!

Hi

It looks like a variety of ink cap to me. Could be this one.

Thanks Jess!!

Now that I have the culprit identified... I'm wondering if they're dangerous to my plant. Short term it seems okay.

But there seems to be a lot of conflicting literature on the web... whether its posionous or not

Anyone have any clue??

I heard that mushroom compost can be quite nutrient rich.. I'm just worried about the particular mushrooms that are growing in my soil.

Ive had mushrooms before.. basic white and/or tan mushrooms.. but ive never seen these kinds in potting soil.

The articles I read seem to go either way.. posionous and not posionous.

Some of the inkcap varieties are edible some are not. None are deadly so you need not be too worried. The smooth /common inkcap which is the one I think you have (but I could be wrong!) is edible but not if you drink alcohol with it. If you do it causes nausea and palpitations. For this reason it has been used in rehabilitation programmes with alcoholics.
Sorry, useless bits of info like that just seem to stay in my head. :P

Jess thanks so much for your help! :D I really appreciate it!

lol I don't think I'll be hungrily exploring and ink cap mushrooms in the near future. But its definately good to know!!

hmmm I wonder if your "useless information" (lol) was the precursor to the pill that causes alcoholics to vomit when they drink..

Useless question .. no need for an answer ;)

I vomited when I drank once, but I don't remember there being any mushrooms around though...

Mushrooms tend to grow in soil that stays damp. I would agree that your mushrooms are a good source of content that will help your soil. The mushrooms are not the most elegant things too look at. I would suggest work them into the ground when the emerge. You many also want to try to move your potted plant to a more sunny location or water it less. That may decrease the mushroom activity, just don't starve your plant! Good luck! :)

Thanks so much for the tip guys!

It seems that they're coming up less.. well in smaller packs now lol...

they grow sooo increddibly fast. It seems sometimes I pick them at night and wake up to more!

LOL!!

They are probably coming up less because their growing season is over. If you really do not like the look of them you could change the soil in the pot. No guarantee that it will get rid of all the spores but should give you less of a problem for a while and as kkersten said. Water less!

I just don't know WHAT it is about those mushrooms..l their just so nasty to look at.. maybe its the stringie caps and that little hard looking top..

don't get me wrong, I love to each mushroom varieties from the produce section.. its just amazing these come up in like gangs or troops..

Ive been watering less too and thats made a vast improvement. its just when I do water it... its a full on invasion. Good I suppose lol.

My dog actually got to a little group and ate one.. he seems to be doing well still lol.. poor guy, ive been watching him and he isnt sick.. but then again hes a dog and he likes to clean his own privates manually with his tongue.
