soil moisture sampling on potted plants/ hanging plants

I am trying to build an automated garden sprinkler system that uses soil moisture indicator, It is set to water the plants on a daily basis, the soil moisture indicator is a trigger that will stop the garden sprinkler system in watering the plants in case the soil is wet due to rain or other things that will make the soil wet. My question is do I need to sample each potted plants/hanging plants or I just sample 1 potted plant/hanging plant for the soil moisture?

Your question tells me you've never grown plants in hanging baskets and potted plants before.

How do you expect to build something without having grown different kinds of plants in different kinds of environments for at least one season?
