Sitting in water......

wondering if a container sitting in the saucer of water that drained out is bad for the plant? Will it possibly cause root rot?

Well, like most garden questions, the answer is it depends...

In general, you don't want your plants/ containers sitting in water for very long. But if the container is outside and you are having hot weather, the water in the saucer will actually be helpful to them. If your container had gotten pretty dry, then it will be able to suck the water back up. I generally only water my house plants once a month. Then I do leave the water in the saucer, so they can keep getting re-hydrated over a period of time. A lot of my outdoor containers, I remove the saucers in spring when it is cool and we are getting lots of rain and then put the saucers back for the hot, dry part of the summer....

But in ordinary conditions (not too hot, plants are getting regular watering/ rain) you would want to empty the saucer once the soil has drained.
