avocados transitioned to soil from water not doing too good

We have had four avocados growing from seed since the early spring.
The two avocados we have kept in water are fine; however, the two put in pots grow leaves only to have them turn brown (translucent spots that form between the veins, and grow until the entire leaf is brown) and fall off. The plants valiantly grow new leaves, only to have these fall off in turn.
At first we thought that there was inadequate drainage, so we repotted them in new, larger pots with drainage holes. The roots seemed fine- not rotten. The behaviour continued.
What would cause this? A mineral excess or deficiency?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Root,

I realize it's been quite some time since you wrote in for help and I was wondering how your avocados are doing now. You might find this helpful.
