white growth on potted maple tree

Hi

Lately I've noticed a sticky white substance all over my potted drooping maple tree. I have no idea what this is. I have attached a pic. The tree itself is around 5 years old.

thanks for the info. It's an odd thing. It sort of looks like larvae of some kind, but it's also very sticky, like something that's oozed from the tree. And there's some fine cobweb filaments too.
