I am a fan of Stephen King and in his book The Who Loved Tom Gordon the hereon finds sustenance from fiddlehead ferns. I would like to try growing some in a container on the patio or in a hanging basket under the live oak - lots of shade. Has anyone grown fiddlehead - in a container or in the yard? Are they as tasty as they are said to be? Good for a snack or to add to a salad?
Thanks All

If you are talking about ostrich fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris) I have them in my NE foundation bed. They grow to 4-5 feet tall. It will be time for them to come up soon here. Very short harvest period because we have such short spring -- a blink and the summer heat makes the fiddlehead unfurl in a couple of days.
It helps that they are in solid shade of the house and only gets morning sun.

Applestar -do you think I could grow some in a large container? I am not looking for a large harvest - just want to play around with it. I can get my hands on large nursery pots - from container grown trees. 10+ gallons. I have the shade. Do I treat them like any other fern?
I use lots of nursery pots on the patio. I don't like the black plastic but rust colored spray paint solves that problem. Much less expensive than purchasing clay or plastic pots.
Thanks
