Mystery substance in soil

I recently bought an indoor palm plant and when I removed the plant from the plastic container, I noticed hundreds of small gray pellets bunched together in the soil. They are round/oval and about the size of peppercorns. I cut one open and it oozed a yellowish substance.

Does anyone know what these are? At first I thought they might be insect eggs, but they seem too big. Then I thought perhaps it is some kind of fertilizer.

Thanks to anyone who can help!

They will be some kind of slow release fertiliser pellets. You will find these in most pot bought plants.

Thanks. I was hoping that was the answer.
