Container plant during the winter

I have a 2.5 foot Cherry blossom tree in a 5 gallon container with the soil filled a little over half way almost 3/4 but not quite, how would this suurvive the winter here if I keep it in it's container. I live in Houston Texas 77014

Cherry trees are quite cold hardy. It should not have any trouble surviving your (mild) winter. But a 5 gallon container, not even full of soil, is not going to be enough soil for your tree for very long.
