Which containers should I use?

I was wondering whether I can use any container that I find at a store.
I went to Big Lots yesterday and saw a lot of storage bins that I thought I could possibly use for my vegetable planting (made of plastic). This seemed like a cheaper way than buying actual planters. Is there a reason I shouldn't use them?
Any cheap suggestions would be helpful!
I thought of possibly also using a baby swimming pool.
