Water rooting

Hello!!

I had an accident with my plant

I was having a problem with the stems rotting off so I clipped the rotted ends off and was attempting to change the soil when MORE stems BROKE off!!! I was almost in tears.

I clipped them down and stuck them in a clear vase and stuck them in a west facing window

the hanging basket**

can someone please verify that I am rooting these properly??

should I plant them in dirt??

before the vines rot in the water and I wont be able to transfer them to dirt if that's what I should even be doing now...

I have just added a few drops of aquarium plant food https://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3714141 hoping it will help...

the vines aren't mushy and rotten yet...

I HOPE I'm DOING THIS THE RIGHT WAY!!!

what is left in the pot they have broken off of looks really pathetic now and I'd like to be able to put these rooted vines back.

The cuttings may form roots in water, which will allow you to repot them in the container of soil. I personally prefer to plant such cuttings in the soil of the container where I plan to grow them. Roots that form in water are different from roots that form in soil. They tend to be more brittle, breaking when being planted in soil, especially soil that's full of another plant's roots. The plants will have to grow new roots when you transfer them to a container of soil. They will probably survive the transfer alright, but may suffer more stress and shock. JMO. :)

I think this hanging plant will make roots in water but agree with kisal about water-formed roots.

Two concerns -- you appear to be using aqua globe waterer in a container without drainage holes -- I havent used one of these but think overwatering can result especially when sun heats up the water in the globe.

Make sure to keep the rooting cuttings out of direct sunlight until new growth emerges -- both in soil and in water.

...so.. I should plant the cuttings in soil then?? the basket has drainage in the plastic lining inside.. it worked just fine until a month or so ago ((shortly before the disaster)) I put them in water because I figured that way I would know if they were rooting okay or not...

I could plant them in the basket just fine I'm just worried that I won' know how well they're doing as I wont be able to see into the dirt

Also I should move the plant ((one potted in soil if thats what I'm supposed to to)) into a shadier spot ((which is possible I will just switch it with my spider plant)) I could also move the vase into shade as well.... I only put it in the sun because I have a neighbor who has water rootings in bright light in clear jars so I assumed I'd try it...

let me know what to do!!!

thanks much guys!!!!

You can tell when a plant has developed roots by it producing new top growth. It won't form new leaves and stem growth until it has roots to provide them with moisture and nutrients from the soil. :)

alright I'll plant them back in the basket move it out of direct light and hope for the best!!

also when I replanted this ((when I messed it up)) I added a netting loofa to the bottom for extra drainage

I stuck the branches into the soil added more water and moved it to this location:
