Shrubs in containers

I would like to grow a pittosporum Wheeler's Dwarf on my patio. If planted in the ground it would grow 2-3 ft high and VERY WIDE (if you let it).

What should I do to limit the WIDTH to no more than 2-3 ft?

And how big --diameter and depth -- should the [final] container be? I would be starting with 5 gal size plant.

(Or is growing this in a container not a good idea to begin with?)

Thank you in advance for any advice and help.

If you grow the plant in a pot, the constiction of the root ball will only allow the plant to grow so high. This just depends on how large a pot that you use.

You could do some root pruning to put the plant in a smaller pot but, I would put the plant in a pot that more or less matches the size of the initial root ball.
