Couple house plant questions...

Why is it that sometimes the tips of the leaves start to turn brown. I have 2 of them and the other one doesn't seem to do it.

And when will I know when I need to put this bamboo in a new pot? And is rock the best medium. I bought one recently that was planted in styrofoam.

I can't tell what the top plant is, picture's too small. If it's bamboo like the bottom, then it either needs fertilizer, or alittlemore light. Most likely fertilizer. A pot with rocks and water is best for the Lucky Bamboo. Don't use styrofoam, that's just bad.

I also can't ID the plant in the top picture because of it's small size. I can't see any detail.

A few reasons for tip browning are:

1) Overwatering, resulting in the death of some of the roots, so sufficient moisture and nutrients can't reach the top growth.

2) Plant has outgrown its pot, so the roots are so dense that they cannot absorb enough water and nutrients to support the top growth.

3) Improper soil was used to pot the plant, or too large a pot was used, so the soil stays too wet, resulting in root rot.

4) The plant in question is sensitive to some substance commonly added to public water supplies, such as chlorine or fluoride.

These are the most common situations that cause the tips of leaves to turn brown. Knowing the specific type of plant you have would be very helpful if finding the exact cause. :)
