Can I use multipurpose compost as potting mix? --UK

Hi,
I'm planning for a vegetable and herb plantation in containers this year. I've identified the pots and seeds but am in a bit of a muddle about potting mix. There isn't any available in Homebase or B&Q yet, but they do a lot of multipurpose compost and growbags. Are these any good and can I use the multipurpose compost to fill the containers for vegetable pots?

Just noticed no one responded to this. I had added the UK in the title to try to encourage responses from some of the MANY UK gardeners that have joined up here. I've noticed that the UK folks aren't real good about responding to each other. I'm GUESSING that folks in the UK don't spend as many hours at their computers as lots of us Americans have the bad habit of doing.

Anyway, I didn't respond before because I have no idea what "multi-purpose compost" means in the UK. Compost as I understand it, tends to be too heavy and dense for use in containers, but that may be different from whatever it is you are talking about. Grow bags are usually used for sticking plants into, I think (haven't personally used them either). The soil in them would be fine for your containers for growing plants.

But starting seeds is a bit different. Small seeds need a very fine light non clumping medium, like potting soil. Obviously you can grow seeds in dirt because that's what happens in nature, but they will do better, with higher success rate in a lighter mixture.

Hope this helps some.
