Philodendron Question

I have a question about my Philodendron. I made cutting's of the three we had, since they probably would have died otherwise, and planted them. Now they starting to finally grow new leaves, slowly, but I want to know what I can do with the exposed stem. The pic will explain what I mean.

The new leaves and stems grow from the bottom near the roots, and leave the old stem just sticking up. All have done this, and I'm wondering if I should leave them and hope they sprout from them, or if I can eventually cut them.

It's sprouting from the roots, so the old stem isn't doing anything. You can just cut it off once a couple new leaves have appeared.
