Needing some major help with Marigold Damage

I've been growing my Merigold for a couple of months now and its beautiful. However it has been through alot. It sits in the windowsill of the kitchen so it can get sun. My plant has had one fall onto the counter when it was small and there was little damage. But just recently it took another fall when I was at work and the damage seems fatal.

the main stalk is nearly cut in two. I was wondering if I cut it, if it will live or should I just keep it together and hope that it will heal.
I really don't wan't my plant to die, I've put a lot of effort into it.

Marigolds are tough.
It is a common practise to stub them back so that they produce more branching.

Jonas right; A good hard haircut might be just the thing to cut out the legginess and stretching. I think it needs more light than it's getting; an outdoor marigold would be far more compact...

thank you for the help. I trimmed most of the bottom "branching" (can't think of the right word). And the damage that was done at the major breaking point looks and feels a lot stronger. I've also noticed that the unbloomed flowers are still growing. So believe that my plant will heal.
