Container Gardening

We have a small patio and usually grow veggies in pots
.
We have grown cherry tomatoes and have given some thought to planting potatoes in a full size whiskey barrel.

Any tips and / or ideas?

Thank you,

Rose

Sounds like it woud work but id think youd only need half barels (fullsize barrels cut in half) they should be deep enough and wouldnt need as much soid and much easier to move around. Ive seen them at walmart already cut in half for $20 I think

TY for responding to my post and for letting me know that a half size barrel will be just as adaquet because I had heard it needed to be way deep for potatoes and you are so right about the half size being MUCH easier to move around.

I see you are from Iowa.
We are planning a trip to Winterset, this summer.
Never been there before so I am excited. :D

Thak you again.

Hey Rose,

Just a big circle of chicken wire (wired into the circle) in the right spot, fill with layers of soil and compost and plant in that. Then all you have to do is snip your wire ties and VOILA! No digging! And now you have a bunch of good dark soil for somewhere else in the yard...

If ALL you have is the patio, then the barrel makes sense, but it's gonna be hard to harvest...
