I am having problems with the soil in my houseplant pots growing hard and moldy on the surface. Does anyone know a possible result and a solution to the problem?

You're sure it's mold (soft and furry looking) and not a buildup of minerals from hard water or excess fertilizer?

Probably not mold but algae. Scrape it off and add a little sceened compost to the soil and it should abate...

Keep an eye for little flys, as fungus gnats and algae are often hand in hand...
