I need info on Sky Pencil Japanese Hollies in containers...

To anyone in the Know...my husband's job site has Sky Pencil Hollies in foam planters with pansies around them. We've had some crazy weather in the past week...temps from the 30's - 70's with some frost as night. The hollies are turning paler green and may turn brown. Just wondering if maybe they're not getting enough water or too much?
Please help. I'm in the Piedmont of North Carolina, Charlotte area.
What Zone is that?
