What caused my plants to wither?
In November, they were going strong, even attracting bees - fast forward a month and half their leaves have browned and fallen off. I'm in Australia, where it's summer, but if I recall correctly the withering seemed to begin after a few days of heavy rainfall.
I'm guessing the problem might be hot temperatures and inconsistent watering?

I think it could be the heatwave. Temps above 90 degrees are hard for many plants to tolerate. Shallow rooted plants are particularly affected. The hot air and dry wind of a heat wave will deplete the leaves of moisture. The location and exposure of your plant also makes a difference. Best to not fertilize during a heat wave. Mulch will help keep the roots moist and cool during a heat wave. Some of my plants showed signs of hot air injury from the heat wave here last summer. The leaves turned brown, like yours. My plants recovered, but heat waves can have lasting effects on plants. I was very concerned about my arborvitaes so I was careful to water them and added mulch to the soil around them. I suggest mulch in your case.
