Tabletop Garden ideas

I have built a nice box for a tabletop garden. It's about 13" x 16" and 3-4" deep. A big stone takes up a lot of one end. The bottom of the box is lined with plexiglass which is slightly sloped. On the bottom of the slope I have a drain hole with a tray underneath it.

I have a couple of questions about what kind of plants to grow in this miniature landscape. First off, should I periodically plug the drain hole to let the ground saturate, or will it maintain the right moisture levels by itself? And of course I would like some recomendations as to what plants to use. I've noticed oregano grows very well inside (needs a lot of water) and I like the small leaves. I eventually would like to incorporate some mosses but from what I've read, they are a real challenge to grow indoors so I think I'll leave that to a future project. I'd appreciate any tips or ideas! :D

Yea. mosses would be tough, and they spore rather than seed; might not be healthy indoors...

SOunds like you have an idea about herbs; that would be a great project.

Globe basil (not the Genovese, too gangly), thymes (a lot of good moss substitutes there), dwarf rosemary...

Houseplants would be good; dwarf philodendron, ivy, miniature ferns...

Succulents would be perfect; cactii, haworthia, mini aloes, kalanchoes...

Think dwarves here; less is definitely more. Smaller plants will allow for MORE plants, and that will make for a bigger impact...

Sounds like such an amazing idea! I would love to know how things turned out! 8)
