Can I prune my cherry tree ?

Hi All

My cherry tree has blossomed first time, so hopefully cherries this year?

Two questions:

Can I prune the tree? shorten the branches now? Theres no blossom on the end of branches

Also how do I protect the cherries from birds?

Thanks

Not sure I'd prune the tree since it is relatively small with few branches. As for protecting the fruit, there are nettings you can toss over the tree to keep birds away from the fruit.

I have an old fig tree in my back yard and my defense is to get out earlier than the birds and pick the figs that are about 1 day away from being ripe. If I don't do that, the birds will come in and pick a hole or two in a fig and move on to another fig, destroying the fruit very quickly. I I'm away and let the figs ripen on the tree, the birds will have their way with them and then the insects will take over, mostly in the form of fruit flies.
