I just found this wierd "boil" on a high branch on my plum tree. I reseached plum tree diseases and the only one that looked like it may be my problem is Crown Gall, but it says it mainly occurs on the stem just above or below the soil line.

I think it looks more like black knot fungus, see this site for some pictures, the one on your tree could be in the beginning stages.

You might want to contact your local Agriculture Extension office for help with this one also.

I know very little about trees, but I know way more than I'd like to about black knot, as we had 20 severly infected trees at our new house. But your growth doesn't look like anything I've seen on our trees. I looked at the pics doccat posted, and I can see how the two might be confused from those photos, but with black knot, the "knots" typically encircle stems and the trunk (in severe cases). Also, none of our trees had only one large growth.
Anyway, I just think it might not be black knot (which would be good news, since black knot is impossible to get rid of!), and may be something else.
