Chinese chestnut is hardy to 5b.

Hmm But I don't think that's Chinese chestnut -- the spines are too rough/bulky and far apart ... I believe this is horse chestnut.

Did it bloom red or white flowers, do you know? Oh wait never mind. I was thinking Buckeye is another possibility but it's the European horse chestnut that are prickly? Red buckeye doesn't have the prickles....

The leaf is horse chestnut for sure. As kids we would spend hours carefully removing the flesh from the viens to produce leaf skeletons.
The nut inside of course gives us conkers. And the object for the game that is played all over the uk every autumn by every child. Conkers!

Can you get a picture of the leaves only? Is the leaf arrangement on the stem opposite or alternate?
