Cherry Tree Pruning

Hello,
I am new to the forum, and this is my first post. I am not real knowledgeable about pruning. I have two cherry trees that are about 20 feet tall. I would like to prune them down so I might get more cherries than the birds this year. I have two questions: 1) I live in Washington state (It is spring, but it has been snowing off and on for the last two days). When should I be pruning my trees? 2) Can I top my trees without killing them?
Any advice would greatly be appreciated.
Kevin

I live across the straight from you and Vancouver Island. It's still nice and cold so the sap should still be somewhat firm in the trees. You can prunenow if you like. Just take your loppers and cut away any branches that cross over eachother to let thte light into your tree.

I'm not an expert on topping trees so I'll let Gnome or someone else answer that question.

If YNOT is around maybe he can lend some advice, as usual all advice is more than welcome.
