What IS this tree?

While walking my dog, I noticed this tree growing not too far from my house.

The fruit is small, hard and red. And the top looks like a pomegranate. Any ideas?

Definitely (I think  ) not an apple beacuse I've seen baby apples around this time of year and don't think they are quite like this one.

I think it's a crab apple! But I'm just guessing! I haven't researched or anything!

I have a crab apple tree but it's apples are a bit different. Maybe different varieties of crab apple? I was guessing pomegranates but I'm not sure, because I'm in zone 7. And the leaves look like some sort of apple.

My neighbor has purple-leaved trees with fruits like those. I think they are ornamental plums ...cherry plums maybe?

Yeah looks really similar, Applestar. But I don't think it's an ornamental plum. I have those growing in my area and the tree itself is a lot different.

Looks more like cherry plum but it's a lot more harder than plums. Hmm...I guess I should pick one off, cut it open and post a pic.

Looks like crabapple berries to me.
I used to have one in my front yard.

Yeah now that you showed me some photos of crab apples I think it actually is a cab apple tree. The crabapple tree I have is producing different apples (different texture).. I guess they are just different varieties.

I'll slice one open and show you guys later.

To my surprise, it wasnt that hard when I cut it, and it's really juicy and red inside.

Looks like it has multiple seeds.

Maybe it's one of these? https://www.greenmantlenursery.com/fruit ... apples.htm

Kinda hard to believe that though...
