What is this insect and how do I get rid of it

I am a novice fruit gardener and have been researching for a while and how to grow some fruit trees in my backyard. I have a few trees that I got and planted over the last week. I noticed that when watering them I found some little holes in the leaves and upon closer inspection I found tons of these little insects on the trees. I've tried to research what they are and I've looked through a few of my books and they appear to be fruit flies but I could be incorrect. Are these the insects that are eating all of the holes in my leaves? What can I do to get rid of them? I went to a gardening store and they recommended an insect spray which I used once and was not effective. I also read the sprays are not good to use cause they also kill good insects. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks in advance

Hello! I'm a beginner, but that doesn't mean I am discouraged to help:
1. Not sure what that insect is, but I will keep you posted!
2. I use egg shells because I read somewhere that it makes for good repellent. I recommend trying that, or looking for other natural repellents so that you aren't wasting money on sprays that may or may not be effective.

It is a female fruit fly. I don't recognize the species. Some fruit flies only lay eggs in fruit and live on other host plants nearby. Remove and bury or trash any fallen fruit or any fruit that has already been stung. The video and general information will apply to most fruit fly species. You will need to get lures specific to your fruit fly but GF 120 works on all of them.

Please update your profile with your zone and location.
Gardeners in Hawaii can get cue lures, methyl eugenol lures and GF 120 at the Master Gardener office at Pearl City Urban Garden Center on week day mornings. Lures are for medfly, melon fly, and oriental fruit flies. The training video is required and you have to know which product you want for which fly. GF 120 is available commercially but cost about $200 for a gallon.

If you live in California or Florida check with your local extension office about fruit fly management.
