What are the numbers for size on trees?

When I'm looking at apple trees online they have a size number next to them - usually ranging from #5-#10. What does this mean? Is is current height in feet or age?

Maybe this site is representative of standard sizing?

What does Feathered, 11/16, 9/16, 7/16 and 5/16 mean? This roughly refers to the caliper and therefore size of a tree. Please keep in mind that not all species and varieties are created equal.
