Alien Fruit

I seem to have some alien fruit growing on my meyer lemon tree. They are large lemon looking like, but much bigger than soft balls. They just started appearing a couple of years ago and I didn't think too much of it. I would cut them off and discard them. This year there must be 20 or more of them. My first thought was that perhaps somehow they were from a grapefruit tree near by. The nearest one is in my neighbors yard 50 yards away. When cut open they appear to be citrus like, but much drier and almost flavorless. Any ideas?

I believe these fruits are growing from the rootstock. It must have snuck by you.

Hopefully it has not overtaken the rest of the tree and the upper, grafted meyer lemon branches are still surviving. You will need to cut off the ENTIRE branches that are sporting these fruits to save the meyer lemon.
