Grafting.

I was looking at the tree of 40 fruits and I never knew you could do stuff like that. When my apples and my pear tree grow fruit is it possible to graft so one grows red apples green and pears on the same tree. Also how hard is it do do properly.

Hi Ben
Apples and pears are not compatable I'm afraid.
They will not let you graft one to the other.
As to the actual grafting.
There are just a couple of rules that you have to apply.
You take the scion.....that's the shoot that you are going to use as a graft.....when it is fully dormant. Ideal size is around the thickness of a pencil. Very early spring is best, just before the sap starts to run. Heal these in the ground in a sheltered spot.( under a hedge somewhere is ideal).
They are then grafted onto the parent tree once it has started into growth. This ensures that the scion receives instant feed once it has been grafted.
Cut the scion to around 4-5inch long. And make sure you seal the graft and the end of the scion with grafting sealer to keep all air and water out while the graft takes.
We have a nursery man near here with a very old Bramley tree on which he has over 100 varieties.....looks fabulous when it's in crop.
