Sour Cherry???

Hi all,

I'm not sure if anyone can help but I'm desperately looking for some fresh sour cherries for a girl I'm in love with. She lived in Moldova for her childhood and moved to the US at a very young age. She would always talk about the taste of fresh sour cherries with an unforgettable smile but I just could not find it anywhere.

At this point I'm still waiting to hear back from a few farms that I've been calling but the season is so short and I'm getting desperate. I live in Palo Alto, CA and I'm willing to drive or even fly to wherever there's fresh sour cherry. But I do have a job and need to work so if there's any place within the bay area or in California it'd be great. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Thank you!

So you aren't looking to grow sour (pie) cherries, just buy them?

Not going to be easy where you are located. They are very cold hardy and need a period of cold dormancy. They don't like long hot summers or winters with warm periods. Most of the tart cherries grown in the United States come from Michigan — there are fewer than 10 acres in California (https://www.latimes.com/food/la-fo-farme ... story.html).

I expect your best bet would be to locate some of those Michigan growers and see if they can express ship fresh cherries to you.

one is here:

https://www.cherrygrowers.net/ Cherry Growers, Inc., is a major fruit processor located in Michigan, the heartland of fruit production, yet is able to deliver to your doorstep. We are a grower-owned cooperative comprised of growers throughout Michigan who deliver apples and cherries from their orchards. Cherry Growers, Inc. (CGI) has been taking care of our customers since 1939.

Welcome to the Forum... Sorry it took so long to get a response!

You must really love your lady!! :)

I think you are looking for prunus ceasus which is a sour cherry tree native to Europe and Asia and used in pies.

The link below is to a company that carries them. It allows you to enter your zip code to see if it will grow where you live.

The OP was looking to buy them, not grow them.
