Easy black/raspberry propagation

Fri Sep 26, 2014 7:10 pm

I am in the habit of digging up wild blackberries and raspberries and taking them home to build up a hedgerow of my own. I have only recently begun experimenting with propagation through cuttings, but have already found that it's spectacularly easy with blackberries and raspberries. I plonked a few cut stalks of each into the ground at the start of last month, with no rooting hormone, no bottles and no real attention at all beyond a few waterings on dry days. Eight out of nine have survived and they have already sprouted new leaves - that was easy!

Way too easy! Watch out for them! Raspberry brambles are taking over my yard.

I love blackberries and spend a good bit of time over the year winding them in, pruning and eating them! I've got wild ones and some that are either cultivated or are crosses of some sort as the berries are huge. Never thought to try them from cuttings, I usually try in vain to remember the ones that I like the best and allow them to hit the ground about now to make there own new plants.
