Urgent Pumpkin Bug Problem!

I just noticed that all my female flowers had been dying and one of the females that I had had a pumpkin developing. It got to about the size of a golf ball and died. I wasn't sure what was happening until I ripped off one of the small dying females and noticed a small green caterpillar looking thing (about 1/2 inch long) inside the un-pollinated pumpkin. I have no idea how it got in there but I'm pretty sure it is the reason my pumpkins will not develop. I really hope to have pumpkins and need to know how to stop this things.

I just saw that there are little holes in the fruit itself and am pretty sure that they are borrowing in through the outside.. :( I'm really distraught and don't know what to do..

Where are you located? If the caterpillar was green, I'm thinking it could be melonworm or Pickleworm but neither are regular pests in my area.
