Im new here... IS MY POMEGRANATE TREE DEAD?

it has lots of green shoots sprouting up from the middle... bark is dried and peeling off on lot of the big thick branches... also some small new green sprouts on few on the branches. Is it supposed to look like this?

It is not dead, but you probably have a lot of dead wood that needs to be cut back. I don't know what caused the branches to debark, but if you cut the branches look for borers. It may have been damage from too much cold.
Happy gardening in Hawaii. Gardens are where people grow.

Re: Im new here... IS MY POMEGRANATE TREE DEAD?

im in austin TX and we are sometimes prone to frosts and freezing temps.. i just moved into this house and the tree was here. Are the shoots in the middle part of the tree? I though they were weeds til i looked closer at them. Maybe i should cut the big dead ones off as much as possible and let the new ones grow...

Pomegranate should tolerate mild frosts down to at least 20 deg F. But something happened to yours. I agree look for signs of insects/ disease. And yes, all you can do at this point is cut all the dead wood out. The tree is not dead and should regrow from new shoots.
