What fertilizer is best for fruit trees, blackberries, blueberries & raspberries?
I currently have 3:1:6 in stock, but don't know if it is the right stuff.
Apparently too much nitrogen promotes foilage growth & should not be applied in spring. A lower nitrogen combination should be used on flowering plants?
Any advice?
Hi Gustav
Your mix is not too bad for fruit production.
The balance between nitrogen and potash favoures the latter so growth over fruit should be ok.
Your right about high nitrogen in the spring. It can induce the plant to grow rather than produce fruit. On apples and pears it can encourage a heavy ' June drop '.
Best time for a good nitrogen boost is straight after fruit has been picked, when it will help the plant to go into the winter with strong bud formation.
( also helps the leaves to dessicate quickly....which helps towards fungal control).
A good booster after picking is a spray of Urea. Very high in nitrogen and gets straight into the leaves and buds.
